Dennis’ 7 Dees Residential Landscape Designer Justin Snodgrass received a call from a potential new client and instantly wowed them with his pleasant demeanor, landscaping knowledge and experience, and creative ideas to transform their outdoor space.

“We knew from the first meeting that we would enjoy working with Justin and trust him to get it done right and professionally… and we’re more than happy we made the choice we did.” – Client

How It Started

The client’s property featured a marvelous view and a vast, sloped backyard brimming with a mix of weeds and mole hills—a landscape full of potential!

“It was a true eye sore. The only thing it had going for it was the view.” – Client

The Client’s Intent

The client wanted a well-designed outdoor space, including a large in-ground pool, hot tub, and entertainment area, that was big enough for their entire family to enjoy together—to relax, swim, and take in the beautiful view.

“We had thoughts on how we wanted it to look but mostly it was what we wanted it to include and the feeling we would have once it was done. We wanted a backyard where we could entertain family and friends or just escape to. We really wanted usable space and something we could enjoy and be proud of.” – Client

The Designer’s Approach

After an in-depth discussion with the client and a comprehensive site visit, Justin developed a landscape design that included the elements on the client’s wish list mixed with his own ideas. He also had to keep in mind the existing conditions and limitations of the space such as elevation changes, potential weather challenges, and the property’s septic system.

Justin decided to integrate Columbia River boulders into a modern landscape design to create a seamless transition into the natural environment around the yard. The landscape plan implemented a mix of rock and Belgard Highland Stone Rio block retaining walls to address the elevation changes, as well as a large in-ground pool and detached spa, paved patio areas and pathways using Belgard Catalina Grana pavers, a fire pit, a SYNAugustine 347 synthetic lawn, and FX Luminaire wall lights.

Project Challenges

Since project installation began in the Fall, Justin and his team labored through some difficult weather conditions, including wind, rain, and snow. They installed plastic covers to protect certain areas and created a gravel road for safe access during the installation process.

Justin also orchestrated and worked with various contractors to get the landscape completed successfully and efficiently, even stepping in to assist when needed. Not to mention, two weeks before the project began, the pool contractor declared bankruptcy, leaving the homeowners devastated. This project surely came with its share of obstacles, but that didn’t stop Justin and his dedicated team—they remained positive and finished the job with their best efforts.

“Justin and Dennis’ 7 Dees picked up the ball and kept it rolling… the project was completed on time, despite the weird weather (snow in April) that we had.” – Client

Project Outcomes & Takeaways

After project completion the following May, Justin was thrilled with how all the materials integrated so elegantly together to create a beautiful backyard! He was disappointed that the clients opted to do the landscape plantings on their own, but he provided his expert advice for plants that would be successful in the outdoor space whenever the clients were ready to proceed.

“I really like the way the project came together. It’s a great space for them to enjoy with their entire family.” – Justin Snodgrass, Landscape Designer

Although the swimming pool was originally the big draw, simply having a well-designed area where the clients can sit and enjoy company or just bask in the peace and quiet of their property is their favorite aspect of the landscape. Their brand new space has completely changed how they live during the Summer months. They spend a good portion of their spare time in the backyard, whether it’s swimming in the pool, enjoying the hot tub, or relaxing by the pool or fire pit.

“I can’t tell you how many of our friends and family now refer to our backyard as a ‘Resort’, some of them even attaching ‘5-Star’ to the description. We can’t agree more. We are beyond happy and proud of the area and feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with such an amazing company.” – Client
