As the calendar turns over to a fresh year, it’s a perfect time to reflect on the past and look to the future for something new. When it comes to indoor plants, we are turning to our experts to help us define the biggest trends in houseplants and houseplant care for 2024!

We asked two of our fantastic houseplant gurus to tell us which houseplants they predict will be big in 2024, and to share the plant gear and goods they just can’t live without!

Rare Plants & Classic Plants Are Equally Valuable

Now more than ever, houseplant trends shift faster than the growth rate of a lot of these precious plants! As more and more enthusiasts join the club, tastes can range from the most exciting looking specimens to the lushest tried-and-true houseplants. In any given hour, we can have one person equally excited to walk away with a rare Monstera ‘Thai Constellation’ as another is thrilled to have stumbled upon the classic full, vibrant Philodendron cordatum hanging basket.

I like to think that our role at Bridgeport Village is to act as a catalyst, connecting folks with current trends but also acting as a friend that guides and supports someone to be both a houseplant enthusiast and a confident indoor gardener.

Dreamy, Peachy Flowers & Foliage

As a Pantone Color of the Year follower, I enjoy incorporating each year’s color into plant and container combinations for an inspired-but-timeless, treasured feel. In 2024, Peach Fuzz will be fun to play with as it’s a color the Bridgeport Village team and I already adore—we are feeling seen!

My first peachy plant pick is Anthurium ‘Rainbow Champion’. It’s so dreamy with flowers that are a subtle but showy peach fuzz-esque color and foliage that provides a silky contrast of burgundy iridescence. Kokedama is my favorite way to plant and display these! To change the vibe for each season, I swap the Kokedama’s shallow bowls and dishes out to add different colors and textures.

The second must-have peachy plant is definitely Aglaonema ‘Lady Valentine’, checking the boxes for ease of care and eye-catching pinky foliage. Lady Valentine’s leaves are so different from more common Aglaonema varieties—you can hardly tell they’re a staple plant at the dentist’s office.

Perfect Statement Plant & Pot Pairings

For a statement, Ficus elastica Burgundy and Ficus elastica Tineke are those trees that scream “I’m here!” while simultaneously fitting in and giving the feeling that they’ve always naturally been there. In years past, columnar cuts (multiple stalks, shrub-form) of these varieties were sometimes the only option available from growers, but the standard cut (tree form) is more prevalent and popular. The standard form of either variety in an LBE Peachycotta container topped off with a mix of Spanish and reindeer moss is one of my favorite combos!

Keep It Clean with Foliage Wipes

My go-to product to level up the appearance, growth, and health of any of these indoor plants is Fantastic Foliage 3-in-1 Wipes. You basically give your plants a monthly spa day using these wipes, ensuring their pops of color and iridescence will be everlasting. Bonus—the scent is so soothing thanks to the hint of essential oils.

It’s All About the Statement Trees

Looking into the exciting year of 2024, many fascinating houseplant trends await us. There are many to look forward to, but I’m most excited to witness the rise of statement trees. These are not just your ordinary houseplants—they are botanical sculptures that deserve attention and that elevate interior design to new heights!

From the majestic Ficus Tree to the elegant Rubber Plant, and even the gorgeous Bird of Paradise, statement trees are making a bold impact in living rooms, offices, and commercial spaces. Their presence not only adds visual interest but also creates a connection with nature in spaces where traditional outdoor gardening is not possible. Tall houseplants are the epitome of green living, transforming interiors into urban jungles and fostering a sense of tranquility amid the hustle and bustle of modern life.

Bold, Maximalist Pots in Retro Colors

When it comes to pottery, seeking out a statement pot that fits these wonderful botanical sculptures is key. We are still seeing minimalistic, ecofriendly, sustainable pottery, but the trend of maximalist energy is on the rise. Finding a pot in eye-catching colors and designs will make these living sculptures pop even more! I’m most excited about the comeback of retro colors such as mustard yellow and oranges. But moody greens and indigos are also up and coming. Seeing unique patterns using black silhouettes and other bold details and designs add something a bit more funky to any space.

Sharp Snips & Clean Neem

Some of my favorite ways to keep statement pieces looking beautiful and healthy are by using quality pruning shears as well as leaf shine spray or wipes. The handiest pruning shears for larger specimens are bypass pruning shears. I’ve used many brands, but my favorite is the Niwaki Sentei Secateurs because of their durability. I also carry smaller pruners such as needle-nose Jungle Club Snippers for those hard-to-reach, finer stems. When it comes to leaf shine, my go to is Packer Plant Co. Neem & Gleam. Not only does it smell lovely, it is also a preventative care for pests as it keeps your foliage shiny and healthy. I also find myself constantly using Fantastic Foliage Wipes if I need a quicker leaf shining method. Both are great to have on hand to help your plants absorb the full spectrum of light and keep them dust free.

I’m excited to see what this year in the plant world has in store as we greenify our spaces!
