Modern Minimalist Backyard Landscape

mulch stone gravel walkway in landscape

The homeowners desired a clean and modern, low-maintenance landscape to compliment their modern and minimalist new home build. Integrating spaces for the family to enjoy and relax was priority. Large open patio spaces, outdoor living area, fire pit, flat synthetic lawn for activities, and pool were at the top of the list. The front yard was to have a different look by incorporating more freeform shapes, colors, and perennials, giving it a softer style. In contrast, the backyard took on a more angular feel with muted colors and simpler forms.

The large amount of concrete work for the patio, paths, and pool work required thoughtful coordination. To create a low-maintenance landscape, synthetic turf was installed in the front and back yard, eliminating the need to mow, water, or fertilize. River rock and gravel were used in many beds to eliminate the need to refresh mulch regularly. Plant pallets were limited mostly to evergreens with color and texture without using much flowering material. This all appealed to their modern and minimalist design aesthetic.
