The goal for this project was to create a functional outdoor living space for relaxing and entertaining guests, while retaining some space for the family dog and a small edible garden. Ornamental grasses and perennial color were also key design elements.
The original slope of the site was a major challenge and consideration. To make the sloped space functional, a series of terraces were created using acid-washed concrete retaining walls and steps, making three distinct spaces: a large lower patio with an outdoor kitchen and fireplace, a middle lawn (for the pup) and veggie garden, and an upper bocce ball court. The corten steel planters, protected by a rustic garden fence, provide just enough space to plant seasonal edibles alongside the espalier fruit trees.
With the vast amount of spring and summer grasses and perennials, we also wanted to be sure that enough evergreens were incorporated to provide autumn color interest as well as planting structure through the winter months. It was tricky to get the right layering from all viewpoints in such a wide open space, but we were able to develop a successful planting plan. The project was a collaboration of wonderful clients and great contractors. It is truly a multi-functional landscape allowing for year-round enjoyment in our challenging Pacific Northwest climate.
